| Software syncs Macs and Windows Mobile |
Nov. 20, 2008
Mark/Space Inc. is providing a free update to its software for synchronizing Windows Mobile devices with Macintosh computers. Version 4.0.4 now supports synchronization with Microsoft's Entourage 2005 and 2008, including contacts, calendar events, and tasks, and stamps out a variety of minor bugs, the company says.
The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile synchronizes notes, calendar, and phone book data on a smartphone or PDA with Macintosh applications including Address Book, iCal, Entourage 2004, and others. It also synchronizes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other files, according to Mark/Space.
Missing Sync's main screen Version 4.0 of the application, released in August 2007, added support for Windows Mobile 6.0 devices. It also added video encoding/decoding capabilities: using a drag-and-drop interface, the application can transcode Quicktime videos into a format suitable for playback in Windows Media Player Mobile 10, then move them to the phone. Conversely, any videos taken with the device can be moved to the Macintosh automatically.
Missing Sync's call log access screen Also new in 2007 was a logging feature for calls and SMS messages (see above). Other features, carried over from previous releases, include photo and music transfer. The application can transfer iPhoto albums onto the phone for display, or automatically move newly-taken photos from the mobile to the Macintosh. In addition, podcasts or unprotected music can be copied from a user's iTunes library to the phone, says MarkSpace.
A 4.0.3 update, released last June, provided no new features, but offered better performance and fixed a variety of problems, according to Mark/Space. For example, the application newly supported password-protected Windows Mobile 6 devices, and allowed devices to be mounted on the Macintosh desktop. In addition, compatibility with the firewall in "Leopard" (OS X 10.5) was improved, the company says.
Version 4.0.4, newly announced, brings more significant change. According to Mark/Space, Missing Sync is now compatible with Microsoft's Entourage, a Macintosh e-mail client and PIM (personal information manager). It can synchronize contacts, calendar events, and tasks from both Entourage 2005 and Entourage 2008, the company says.
Additional changes in version 4.0.4 of The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile include the following, says Mark/Space:- Worked around problem with HTC's TouchFLO 3D system and contact photos
- Fixed rare crash when quitting application
- Improved playlist generation to support files with international characters
- Fixed a problem which could cause videos to not get converted when copied to the device
- Fixed a problem where editing a file could lead to file corruption
- Added warning recommending turning off advanced network functionality (RNDIS) on the HP iPAQ 110 because of problems with the device
- Fixed problem where syncing of some groups or calendars was not working correctly
